When we want our desire more than we want its absence (in the form of hope or longing), we achieve success. This painting represents this dynamic through the symbolism of bursting sunflowers in a “V” shape for Victory. The cheerful brightness of the sunflowers indicate hopefulness, and the dark blues present a feeling of nightfall–what was, the past, history–a longing.
