Connection. From quantum physics to the largest galaxies, every object and system is connected. The 37 trillion cells that make up you are connected to the 39 trillion cells that live in and on you, but are not "you." Yet, we are dependent on them to survive, to function, to live. This painting was one that I made more recently and represents the deep interconnectedness of all objects and systems in the known universe. The brilliant and gentle astronomer Carl Sagan inspired these ideas in my consciousness when he stated that to bake an apple pie, you first must have a universe. And not only an apple pie, but every other object--including orchids--because every object in the universe is the universe itself. To have an orchid, you need the cosmos: the atoms and molecules that arrange themselves in a particular order that produces an orchid. Indeed, it took stars to make orchids, and the human reading these words.
